Mission Statement

PILATES HOUSTON ASSOCIATION is a community of Pilates and mind-body professionals dedicated to inform, motivate and transform the public through healing movement systems. We support our members through education, networking and professional development.

Background

The Pilates Houston Association (PHA) began in 2008.  It was a grassroots collection of Pilates teachers and studio owners.  All from various Pilates background and affiliations, a local community developed.  It has grown to include ‘Bodyworkers’ such as Massage Therapists.  Soon to complete its’ third year, the PHA can begin applying for non-profit status.

Inform

On this website you will find a listing for Pilates Instructors and Bodyworkers in the Houston area - all PHA members. You can also find a page on ‘What is Pilates’ and things you should look for in a qualified instructor.

The PHA has a quarterly newsletter. Articles are written by various teachers and experts in the Houston area. You can access the current newsletter or find past articles on the news page.

From the beginning, one of the goals of PHA has been to offer reasonably priced quality continuing education for Pilates teachers. The PHA holds an annual workshop. Each year it has received continuing education credit approval from the international Pilates Method Alliance (PMA). On the workshop page, you will find the latest on the best local workshops.

On the ‘jobs/for sale’ page, find the latest listings. To post a job at your studio/gym or to sell a piece of Pilates equipment, please visit the contact page and send us the details. PHA will post on the website at no charge. Postings are kept up for the month and then cleared to keep the site current.

Motivate

PHA has been active in fostering the professional community as well as reaching out to the larger Houston community. The local PHA has been proud to support the international Pilates Method Alliance® (PMA)®  in celebrating Pilates Day® in both 2009 and 2010. “Pilates Day was created by the PMA to promote awareness of the many benefits that the Pilates Method brings to every age group, and to promote healthy living.”*

PHA has organized local studios and teachers to offer a free or discounted class on Pilates Day as a way to introduce new comers to the method and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Locally, PHA has turned Pilates Day into a charity event. All the proceeds from the Pilates Day classes that did have entrance fees were donated to a designated charity. In 2009, it was St. Jude Children’s Hospital and in 2010 Child Advocates.

Transform

With the help of local studios and teachers through the donations for Pilates Day classes and a silent auction held on Pilates Day, PHA has helped to raise nearly $3,000 for St. Jude Children’s Hospital in 2009 and $300 for Child Advocates in 2010.

In addition, PHA arranged for classes at Sally’s House, a local women’s shelter. Various teachers within the PHA volunteered their time and expertise to teach weekly classes for the wonderful women at Sally’s. Classes ran from summer 2008 -2009.

PHA also reaches out to the Houston community doing presentations.  In June 2010, Texas Women's University invited the PHA to do a presentation on the stress relieving benefits of Pilates.  The Association is pleased to enhance the local community through the Pilates Method.
